GEORGE HINES LEADERSHIP AWARD NOMINATION

 

The George Hines Leadership Scholarship Award is a $500 cash award offered by Leadership Through Drama, Inc., (LTD) recognizing an individual for their outstanding leadership in the community.

  •   Any graduating senior of the community of Mills County , Iowa , is eligible to be nominated for the annual George Hines Leadership Scholarship Award.
  • Anyone can nominate a student for the George Hines Leadership Scholarship Award. A student may not nominate him/herself or a relative.
  • The nomination must be completed on the attached form.
  • A student may receive the award only once.
  • The award will be determined by the LTD Scholarship Committee. Decisions of the LTD Scholarship Committee are final.
  • The annual award will be made to a student who has enhanced the community through a leadership role in education, family, community, youth, arts, and/or the environment. The Committee will look for demonstrated initiative and commitment of the individual that is above and beyond the expected.
  • Nominations are due to LTD at the above address by April 30 th, 2007 . The award will be made in late May 2007.

Marion Elizabeth Jurgens 90 was born June 7, 1916 in Council Bluffs, Iowa to Herman Lewis Kruse and Clara (Huebner) Kruse. She was baptized at the First Lutheran Church in Papillion, Nebraska by Rev. A.W. Siebert on August 20, 1916, and was confirmed at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Council Bluffs on Palm Sunday April 13, 1930 by Rev. Martin Mueller. She attained perfect attendance for eight years at Goheen country school, and graduated from Glenwood High School in 1933.
On February 14, 1934, she was united in marriage to Harvey Samuel Jurgens at the country home of her parents. Their marriage was blessed with three children, LaMona Kay, Gene Harvey, and Carol Sue. The couple farmed in Ingraham and Center Townships for 33 years.
Marion was a long time member of St. John Lutheran Church in Mineola. She taught Sunday School for many years and served as President of the St. John American Lutheran Church Women in 1963. She was a past member of the Advisory Council for the Malvern Community Schools.
In 1966, Marion began work at the Glenwood State Hospital School and later that year she and Harvey moved to their home in Glenwood. They had been married 46 years when Harvey died on April 10, 1980. In 1984, Marion retired from the Glenwood Resource Center, having worked as the Assistant Director of the Foster Grandparent Program for many years. She carried on her hobbies of gardening, sewing, crocheting, and playing bridge and pinochle. Marion was active in sports, including softball and bowling, and was inducted into the Glenwood Women’s Bowling Association Hall of Fame in 1995.
In October 2002, Marion moved from her Glenwood home to the Risen Son Christian Village in Council Bluffs, Iowa, where she died on March 30, 2007 at the age of 90 years, 9 months, and 25 days.
Marion was preceded in death by her parents Herman and Clara Kruse; husband Harvey Jurgens; sisters Beatrice Huffman and husband Kenneth, Helen Pitzer and husband Franklin, Mae Schoening and husband Harvey, and Dorothy Bishop and husband Fred; brothers Otto Kruse who died in infancy, Clyde Kruse and wife Geraldine and LeRoy Kruse and wife Lorraine.
She is survived by her children La Mona Jurgens of Glenwood, Gene Jurgens and wife Cheryl of Collins, IA, and Carol Patterson and husband Larry of Glenwood; by three grandchildren, Jim Patterson of Los Angeles, California; Sam Jurgens and wife Shelley of Collins, IA; and Jeff Patterson of Council Bluffs; three great-grandchildren, Payge Jurgens, Hanah Jurgens and Davyn Jurgens; many nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends.

Etta Glenelle Kruse, 62, of Glenwood, Iowa entered into eternal rest on March 31, 2007 at her home in Glenwood. She was born July 26, 1944 in Council Bluffs, Iowa to Glee Clay and Avanelle Winifred (McIntire) Dashner.

At age four, Glenelle attended Burr Oak Country School. She enrolled at East Elementary at age eight and graduated from Glenwood High School in 1961. She attended the University of Nebraska and was on their synchronized swimming team. She later went on to teach Red Cross Swimming Lessons in Glenwood. On Sept. 29, 1963, Glenelle was united in marriage to Charles Conrad Kruse in Glenwood, IA. To this union two sons were born, Aaron and Jerad. In 1980, Glenelle earned her R.N. from Jennie Edmundson School of Nursing. Glenelle was working on completing her Masters Degree. She was the Glenwood Community School nurse for many years and later became the director of Home Health & Hospice Care with Montgomery County Memorial Hospital in Red Oak.

Glenelle was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, Glenwood Booster Club, and very involved in the Relay for Life. She had a zest for life, loved vacationing, being with her family and friends and had a special love for her three grandchildren.

Preceding Glenelle in death was her father, Glee in 1985. She is survived by her loving husband Chuck Kruse of Glenwood, IA; sons, Aaron Kruse of Glenwood, IA; Jerad & wife Michelle Kruse and their children, Maegan, Cassie and Gavin all of Glenwood, IA; mother Avanelle Dashner of Glenwood, IA; brother Sherrill & wife Criss Dashner of Pacific Junction, IA; niece Jill Dashner and nephew Justin Dashner; aunt Gelena Pullman of Memphis, TN; several cousins, extended relatives and a host of friends.
Memorials may be made to the Glenwood Booster Club, American Cancer Society or Grace United Methodist Church, Glenwood, Iowa.

Lucille Cleophas Seipold, 92 daughter of Frederick Franklin and Cleophas (Smay) Brightenburg, was born January 23, 1915 in Omaha, Nebraska. Lucille was baptized on February 7, 1915 in Omaha. When Lucille was six years old, her mother died and she was sent to Pennsylvania to live with an aunt and uncle for several years. Lucille then moved to the Pacific Junction and Glenwood, Iowa area where she lived with her father and loving stepmother, Daisy (Siemsen) Brightenburg. Lucille graduated from Glenwood High School in 1933, and worked for a short time at the Glenwood State Hospital School.
Lucille and Otto Carl Seipold were united in marriage on February 12, 1936, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Council Bluffs, Iowa. They were blessed with four children, Otto Frederick, Raymond Keith, Deanne Lucille, and Karen Elaine. Shortly after their marriage, they moved to Glendale, California, where they lived for a brief period of time. She was confirmed on March 21, 1937 at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Glendale. She and Otto then moved back to Iowa where they farmed in the Hastings and Emerson area. They joined St. John’s Lutheran Church in Hastings.
In 1961, Lucille and Otto moved to Glenwood, and transferred their church membership to Trinity Lutheran in Glenwood. In December of 1963, Lucille began working in the dietary department at the Glenwood State Hospital School. Lucille became an active member at Trinity, singing in the choir, serving on the Ladies Aid and the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League. After 14 years at the State Hospital School, Lucille retired in March of 1977.
Lucille and Otto had been married 43 years when Otto died on March 16, 1979. Following Otto’s death, Lucille returned to the State Hospital School, where she served as a foster grandparent from 1980 until 2000. During those 20 years, Lucille experienced great joy and contentment caring for a number of the residents.
Lucille enjoyed caring for her family, baking, working in the garden tending to her flowers and plants. She remained active in her church and was a member of the Mills County Iowans for Life. Lucille was known for her sense of humor and caring ways.
In 2001, Lucille’s heath forced her to move to the Bethany Lutheran Home in Council Bluffs, Iowa, where she died on March 26, 2007 at the age of 92 years, 2 months, and 3 days. She was preceded in death by her parents; stepmother; husband; son Raymond; brothers Donald, John, Mark, Frank, and Joe; half-brothers Robert Brightenburg and Byron Maxwell; sisters Grace Eby, Mary Patton, Florence Michelizzi, and Margaret Brightenburg; and step-sister Stacia Nichols.
Lucille is survived by her son Fred Seipold and his wife Norma of Omaha; daughters Deanne North and her husband Ernie of Glenwood, and Karen Leick of Council Bluffs; sister Elsie Starbuck of Tulsa, Oklahoma; half-sisters Elaine Landall and Rosemary Gonsalves of Carmichael, California; 11 grandchildren; 2 step-grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; 4 step-great grandchildren; nephews and nieces; other relatives and friends.

Stephen Julius Speck, 67 one of three children of Ezra Frederick Speck and Eva Wilhelmina (Kiersch) Speck, was born at his parent’s farm home near Mineola, Iowa on September 10, 1939. Stephen grew up on the farm with his sister Mary Margaret and brother Paul. He attended the Vogeler School and the Silver City High School where he graduated in 1958.
Following school, Stephen began his lifelong farming career. He worked with his mother on the farm and in 1961 his brother Paul joined the farming operation. Stephen was an active member of St. John Lutheran Church where he served for a short time on the church council and rang the bell every Sunday morning. He loved his garden and was a very social person who enjoyed long visits with family and friends. Stephen enjoyed giving of himself. He was a member of the Mineola Volunteer Fire Department and had a genuine concern for others, always checking in on friends. His nieces and nephews were very important in his life and he loved the time he spent with them.
Stephen died at the Glen Haven Home in Glenwood, Iowa on March 31, 2007 at the age of 67 years, 6 months, and 21 days. He was preceded in death by his parents, nephew Bruce Heinrichs, and niece Jennifer Speck.
Stephen is survived by his sister Mary Margaret Heinrichs and her husband Arnold of Bruning, NE; brother Paul Speck and his wife Leslie of Mineola; nieces and nephews Brian Speck of Mineola, Cheryl Walsh and her husband Richard of Hebron, NE, Erick Speck of Red Oak, IA, Gretchen Jopp and her husband Ivan of Malvern, IA, and Trudy Beery and her husband Donovan of Omaha, NE; eight great nieces and nephews; a great great niece and nephew; and many friends.

Lee Warren Wilcox, 82, of Glenwood, Iowa entered into eternal rest on March 30, 2007 in Council Bluffs, Iowa. He was born Jan. 27, 1925 to Henry Bertrand “Bert” & Cecil Effidel (Anderson) Wilcox in Glenwood, Iowa. Lee Warren graduated from Glenwood High School in 1944 and faithfully served in the Army during WWII following graduation. He was united in marriage to Virginia May Kemp on Febr. 3 1946 in Glenwood, Iowa. To this union three daughters were born, Jolene, Iola and Shari.

Lee Warren was a self-employed grain dealer in the trucking business for many years. He was active in Glenwood Rotary, Chamber of Commerce, Glenwood American Legion Post 141, Band Parents, Men’s Bowling League and was a member of Glenwood Community Church.

Preceding Lee Warren in death were his parents, sisters, infant Julene Wilcox & Beulah Clark, brothers, Elmo Wilcox, Blaine Wilcox, & Laval Wilcox. He is survived by his wife Virginia Wilcox of Glenwood, IA: daughters, Jolene & husband John Justus of Kansas City, MO; Iola Strand & Kevin Lawrence of Blaire, NE; Shari Brisbois of Omaha, NE; 5 grandchildren; Jennifer Techau, Mandy Whitsitt, Ryan Strand, Angela Ferris & Leah Brisbois; 4 great-grandchildren; Dylan Ferris, Kaileen Ferris, Marian Techau Parker, Julia Techau Parker; sister, Darlene & husband Melvin Durkee of Gilbert, AZ; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.
