Carrie Merritt is an influential part of the Glenwood community, putting new ideas into play constantly.
Merritt is on the board of directors for the Senior Center, the Mills County Historical Museum, and for Mentoring for Heart and also helps wherever she can.
“I felt that some people needed help,” explained Merritt, “so I helped start Mentoring with Heart and have been on the board since the beginning.”
Merritt has many duties as President of the Historical Museum. She gets to direct meetings of the board and volunteers that help inventory the 7,000 plus items the museum owns.
“My husband grew up in Glenwood and donated a lot to the museum,” said Merritt. “He got me into history and I can’t quit.”
Merritt said she likes history if she doesn’t have to remember dates, but she can remember them if they are repetitive.
Showing her skill for making things happen, Merritt helped make the Glenwood Senior Center what it is today.
“Several years ago, my friends and I thought Glenwood seniors needed a place to meet,” explained Merritt. “We have developed into more than just meals. People can go down and play dominoes if they want. It’s a place for fellowship, fun, and food.”
Even with Merritt’s busy schedule, she still finds 20 hours or more a wekk working at the First Congregation United Church of Christ where she’s on the Board of Deacons and Sunday School Superintendent.
“I like to keep busy and be around people,” said Merritt. “I have to do something to keep me out of my rocking chair and out of mischief.”
