Glenwood is truly the best of two worlds! Nestled in
the foothills of the Missouri River, Glenwood offers the serenity of a small town and yet
is only minutes away from opportunities afforded a larger metropolitan area. A strong
attraction for those who work in Omaha is that one leaves the work traffic behind when
directed east towards the hills.

Mills County Court House located on Clock Tower Square
Glenwood, the county seat, with a population of 5200, is a growing
community with a progressive yet friendly business district. A picturesque downtown square
surrounds a court yard of trees and shrubs framing the Mills County Court House and renown
clock tower.
Meet the people . . . Say "Hello!" We think you will be
pleasantly surprised.

Glenwood Lake Park
Glenwood Lake Park, the pride of Glenwood, offers area residents a
chance to "kick back and enjoy" a beautiful picnic area surrounding a scenic
Glenwood Lake. Adjacent to the park are newly constructed horseshoe pits along with a five
acre recreation and sports complex, complete with tennis courts, ball diamonds, and soccer
fields.

Davies Amphitheater
Amidst the pines, overlooking Glenwood Lake, is the Mills County
Museum complex and the Davies Amphitheater.
The Davies
Amphitheater is without question the finest outdoor theater in Iowa.
Performances throughout the summer are provided by a trust set up by the estate of the
late Charles Davies.
A local theater group, the Mills Masquers, perform comedies,
melodramas, and musicals several times each year, utilizing the amphitheater and their
newly constructed playhouse. Tryouts and participation are open to the public.

Glenwood Golf Course
The Glenwood Golf Course offers a nine-hole challenge to members and
public alike. Chamber Golf Days, an annual event, gives area residents a chance to
introduce Glenwood to friends and associates, while enjoying a weekend of fellowship and
golfing fun.

Pony Creek Lake
Pony Creek Recreational Area, located just west of Glenwood, offers
a "low-key" opportunity to get back to nature with a 20-acre lake for boating
and fishing. The park includes picnic and overnight camping areas, as well as a
"learn about nature" trail.

Loess Hills
The scenic Loess Hills (rhymes with bus) are described as magical.
Created by wind-borne glacial river silt, the talcum fine soil and eerie land formations
exist only two places on earth: Kansu Province which is along the Yellow River in northern
China; and here, where stark high bluffs tower above the Missouri River flood plain. The
wind beats against the hollows, reshaping trees and gnarling the prairie grass.
Wild turkey and deer roam the hills while buzzards circle and coyote
prowl among the burr oak. Lizards scuttle in the dust. This is where the real West begins.
For 10,000 years the elements have hacked away at these hills, even old roads are still
passable. Back in the hollows, it is the same as when the last wagon train went through.
The Missouri River Valley is the major north-south water fowl
migratory pathway through the central United States.
In the 1950's, the Missouri channel was rerouted by the Army Corp of
Engineers. Low-lying river valley ground between the bluffs and the present river channel
is some of the most fertile and productive farmland in the entire world.
All of this makes the Glenwood Area a virtual outdoor paradise for
hunters and nature lovers alike.
